Edwards Released

Monday the Bills released quarterback Trent Edwards. Alot of questions here. Why was he released after just a couple of games into the season? Why wasn't he released during the off season? and, why was he released at all. Bills coach Chan Gailey is a pretty good judge of talent. Edwards has the talent to be a quarterback in the NFL. But he's not a leader and doesn't play well under pressure. Those two traits got him fired in Buffalo. It's better to get rid of him now, than to leave him on the roster and cut him at the end of the year. Edwards isn't the answer. The Bills needed to head in another direction. Fitzpatrick isn't the answer either. Maybe the Bills should audition Brian Brohn. He was a second round pick and projected as a future NFL quarterback. I'm excited that this team realizes where it needs to go, now, finnally.

Steelers and Bills Talk

The Steelers win over the Bucs makes them 3-0. Pittsburgh looks like a Super Bowl contneder.
Why, their defense is unbelievable. Everyone talks about Troy Polamula. What about Aaron Smith. The Steelers defensive end may be the one who makes the whole Steelers defense go. The Steelers evidently do not need Big Ben. Charlie Batch comes off the bench and throws three td passes. But, it's the Steelers defense that runs their ship.
The Bills offense looked better with Ryan Fitzpatrick at the hel. But, quarterbacking mistakes eventually did in the Bills offense. The Bills plain and simple need a franchise quarterback from next year's draft. And, the defense needs to be tougher. The Bills need a run stuffing linebacker and a pass rushing linebacker too.
It's the same old problem with this defense, can't stop the run and can't get pressure on the quarterback.

King of the HIll at McKean County Raceway

Thursday night I had a chance to take in the Fall Classic at the McKean County Raceway in Smethport. It was my second trip to the track and wow, the racing was spectacular.
My wife and I had a chance to go into the pits with Barry Synder. Barry even took us through one of the Late Model haulers and their truck-motor home. McKean County Raceway also had a King of the HIll for Late Models and that was a treat. The weather was beautiful and the fans were really nice to us. Congrats to Ken Leet and the crew for bringing in the 2009 World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year and several other touring drivers from the northeast and even Wisconsin and Deleware. thanks again, Barry and Ken.

Batch Gets Call for Steelers

The Steelers will go with Charlie Batch Sunday at Tampa Bay. This is a good move. although, Charlie is 35, he has the expereince in the Steelers offensive system to manage the game so the defense can win it for them. With the Steelers at 2-0 and Ben Roethlisberger to return in three weeks the team is in good shape despite being without their starting quarterback for the first four games. I thought that if the Steelers went 2-2 without Big Ben they would be fine and make the playoffs. Now they could be 3-1 or 4-0 when he returns. That would put them in perfect place to win the AFC North. And, Batch is the right move going against the Bucs team, although, 2-0, but ready for an off game, especially against that Steeler D.

Bills and Steelers

The Bills decision not to start CJ Spiller mindboggling. Where's 2009's number one pick Aaron Maybin. TheBills could have had Clay Matthews. He was drafted behind Maybin in 2009. Matthews had 13 tackles yesterday and three sacks. Maybin, well 13 plays no tackles. Look at the Bills offensive line. The Bills need tackles and haven't drafted one in the first four rounds in 10 years. The Bills are bad because their past 10 drafts have been awful. You build your offense and defenses from the front back, not the back, front like the Bills have. Many feel the Bills secondary is the best in football. Doesn't matter, if your line and linebackers can'r play.

The Steelers are 2-0. Their defense forced seven Titan turnovers. Lawrence Timmons, Jason Worilds, Aaron Smith, it goes on and on quality draft selections by the black and gold. That's the difference between the Steelers and Bills. Pittsburgh is built thru the draft, the Bills aren't, period.

Quiti Picking on Buffalo

Why does the national media keep picking on the Bills? You very rarely see news about the Bills on ESPN or innespapers like the LA Times unless it's about them moving or how bad they are. However, the Bills sld out their home opener last Sunday against the Dolphins. And, there are five NFL teams who didn't sell out their openers, including Detroit, San Diego and Jacksonville. When teams are mentioned as possible suitors for Los Angeles The Bills are ussually the first mentioned. But, the Bills sell-out. Wednesday on ESPN former Bills quarterback Jim Kelly said he has a group of investors ready to buy the Bills someday and keep them in Buffalo. And, I think the Bills are headed in the right direction now on the field too. Look at all of the Bills backers groups throughout the nation. When the Bills play on the road there's always a great Bills presence in the stands. So, stay off our backs America the Bils are America's team and not the Cowboys.

Steelers Need Better Passing Game

The Steelers had a 50 yard touchdown run by running back Rashard Mendenhall in overtime Sunday in the win over the Falcons on WESB. But, face it Steeler fans, the Black n Gold struggled offensively with Dennis Dixon at the controls last Sunday. The Titans are going to put eight and nine guys in the box and force Dixon and the Steelers to throw it Sunday. If The Steelers are to win in Tennessee they have to get some kind of passing game going. We all know that Big Ben returns to the lineup in three weeks. But, the Steelers need to go at least 2-2 during Roehtlisberger's absence to have a chance at the playoffs. Dixon has to play better and the Steelers need to block more efficently too.

Bills Offensive Woes

For the most part the Bills pass blocking wasn't bad. When a Dolphins team puts nine and 10 men in the box and dares you to throw you had better be able to compelete passes. If you don't you lose. The Dolphins aren't dumb, they know to beat the Bills you must take away their running game. The Bills pass offense struggled because their quarterback still makes bad decisions and poor throws. I think the Bllls know he was their best chance at the end of training camp. In a couple of weeks it may be Brian Brohm. Let's face it. The Bills defense wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The offense was worst then I thought it would be. But, Sunday's loss also tells me that the Bills still do not have their franchise quarterback. it may come next April in the likeness of Jake Locker of Washington. Locker is the top rated quarterback in next year's draft.

Owls and Bulldogs Tonite

The Owls host Meadville tonight at 7pm at Parkway Field and on WESB and The Hero.
Meadville is 0-1, but big and strong. the owls are small and fast. If the Owls are to win this one their defense must play like last weekend in the win over the Huskies. The Owls defensive line and linebackers surprised even me with their shutout performance. Defensive coach Jeremy O'Toole has done a nice job with this group and got them to shine last Friday night. When your ends and d-tackles are making tackles that is a great sign. One thing is evident, to play in district 10 football you have to be fast, not only in the backfield, but up front offensively and defensively. Let's go Owls!

Williams on theDL

I know all about the disabled list know. A strained hamstring sidelined Frankie from the City Beers golf league Tuesday nite. I guess too much golf and then trying to cut the lawn over the holiday weekend did me in. It doesn't help when you try to do too much and cut the ditch as well. A slide down the hill and a spill damaged my hamstring on the side where I had my hip surgery. the hips fine, but it looks like two weeks at least on the DL. Missing golf hurts and poor Mikey, my partner, was left to toil without me. I know that next year I will be 100 precent. That's what I got to look forward to. The golf game hasn't been what it was, but a lesson from Kirk and I should be good in the spring.

Owls Opener Tonite

The Owls host the Olean Huskies tonight in the 113th renewal of this storied rivalry. Kickoff is at 7pm at Parkway Field. Owls pregame on WESB, The Hero and WESB.com on the air at 6:45 with Jeff Puglio's coaches show. Will the Owls win? I think so. Olean has a good team, the Owls a good and experienced team. With the reutn of the entire Owls backfield and a couple of lineman the edge goes to the Owls.
The Owls were 6-4 last season. Last year the Team started 6-0 and finished 0-4. So Jeff Puglio and his coaching staff expreienced the highs and lows of a first year at the helm. That should help too. The Offensive line has expereince too and that always helps. I do not predict high school football games. But, I will tell you this Owls team will play hard and fast. Go Owls!

Big 10 Lineup

The Big 10 has realigned it's conference with the addition of Nebraska.
Now we have two seperate divisions for 2011 and a playoff to crown the Big 10 champion. How about the divisional lineup? Penn State is in with Ohio State and Wisconsin. And, Michigan is in the other division. It sort of stinks that Penn State may not play Michigan ever year. It's like when the NFL setup it's current divisions. Think about the Bills being in a division with Cleveland and Pittsburgh. It would not only be goof for Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Cleveland, but think about the storylines on ESPN. With the super-conference setup in college football some of the best rivalries, like Penn State-Michigan will be lost.

Williams Kelly Lose Again

Last night it was the team of Eric Haynoski and Justin Girard who took Wiliams and Kelly down on the golf course. Huhnewski and Girard can both play and are in second place in the City Beers Golf League. What really set them apart last night was there matching pink shirts and their golf balls. See, on their golf balls they had written Mike and Frank suck. Lots of class, huh? Actually, we had a ball, although we lost, it was a hoot. Both of those guys can hit a golf ball too. Although, Girard has a 60 degree wedge, but never hits it because he says it doesn't fly as far as his driver.
Thanks guys!
